I have been working as an occupational therapist for 10+ years prior to joining the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as an academic. I have been passionate in the field of hand therapy ever since I was a student and I had wide experiences working in the field of orthopaedics, burns, hand rehabilitation, paediatrics in hospitals and rehabilitation centres. I joined PolyU in 1989 to start my academic work first as a lecturer, then to a full professor in 2007. During the 28+ years of work at the university, I was appointed as the BSc OT programme leader, MSc Rehabilitation Scheme leader and later became the Associate Head of the department (Rehabilitation Sciences). I am involved in teaching the core subjects on Physical dysfunction and the subject “Advanced OT practice in Hand rehabilitation” for the master students. Other than teaching the undergraduates, master and doctorate students, I have weekly consultation sessions at our University Rehabilitation Clinic where I meet patients with hand injuries, burn injuries, children with disabilities and other patients with physical disabilities. I also provide consultation services and programme planning for different organisations and serve as expert witness for medical legal cases. I completed my MPhil and PhD studies under the supervision of Prof. L.K. Hung, a famous hand surgeon at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and both of the research studies were on rheumatoid hand and paediatric hand. Currently, I am the visiting professors of Sichuan University, Chongqing No. 3 Military University, Kunming Medical University and Guangdong Industrial Rehabilitation Hospital.
In 2004, I was elected as the President of the Asia Pacific Federation for Societies of Hand Therapists (APFSHT) at the joint conference with Asia Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (APFSSH) in Japan. I was one of the founding members of the Hong Kong Society for Hand Therapy (HKSHT) which was established in 2007. Subsequently, I assisted the local organising committee to prepare the following hand conferences in Thailand (2006), Hong Kong (2008), Taiwan (2009), Indonesia (2002), Malaysia (2004). During the process of organising the APFSHT conferences, I assisted the local organizing committee to set up their own Hand therapy societies. So far, other than Japan and Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines have already formed their hand therapists’ societies. I was fortunate to meet with a number of hand therapy giants, Ms. Evelyn Mackin, Ms Elaine Fess, Ms. Judy Colditz who inspired me on their passion for patients with hand injuries. My research focus is on hand therapy, paediatric hand and burnt injuries. I have set up a research laboratory on hand and burns research. Currently, I am supervising 5 PhD students and 3 DHSc students.
